What the current evidence shows

  • The latest available evidence is observational and platform-specific. It shows what happened in measured samples through 2025 and 2026, not a guaranteed 2027 outcome.
  • AI Overviews are associated with fewer outbound clicks, especially to cited sources, making brand mentions and on-SERP visibility more important alongside traffic.
  • Rapid percentage growth in AI referrals starts from a small base: organic search still produced more than a trillion visits in Semrush’s 2025 dataset.
  • AI-search and conventional SEO increasingly share an operating model, but citation, mention, rank and referral traffic are distinct metrics and should not be reported interchangeably.
  • Human editorial leadership remains important: content classifications correlate with rankings, but the studies do not prove that the use of AI alone causes a page to rank or fail.
